Asurion LLC is a private company based in Nashville, Tennessee, providing insurance for phones, tablets, consumer electronics, satellite receivers and jewelry. In 2014, the company operated with 49 offices in 14 countries with 19,000 employees serving 280 million consumers.
History
In 1995, Stanford graduates Kevin Taweel and Jim Ellis used a fund to acquire the Houston-based roadside assistance company Road Rescue. The roadside assistance service was sold through local wireless service providers. Four years later they acquired the Merrinac group, which offered insurance on phone coverage.
The company began expanding its operations globally in 2003, with an expansion to Asia, followed by expansions to Europe (2008) and Oceania (2013). The company expanded to Latin America in 2014 in association with América Movil.
The company’s products and services have branched out since its inception, due in part to acquisitions. On January 1, 2006, the Lock/line company merged with Asurion creating DST Systems Inc, the parent company of Lock/line. With the acquisition of Lumitrend in May 2006, the company expanded its portfolio to include CellBackup software. Also in 2006 the company acquired Warranty Corporation of America (WaCA) which in 2008 merged with National Electronics Warranty. In 2013, The Soluto firm was acquired.
As the company expanded, it realized that customer service was a problem. So in February 2017 Asurion launched a service that provided customer service through on-demand workers and machine learning. Through Soluto, Asurion acquired Drippler, a technology support application company, in 2017, which merged with Soluto.2 In August 2019, Asurion acquired uBreakiFix, a chain dedicated to phone repair and electronic.
In 2018, Asurion borrowed $3.75 billion via two loans, the proceeds of which would go to the private companies that acquired the company in 2007. Both loans led to the company ending up with $11.3 billion in loans. In 2019, Asurion paid $300,000 to a person who claimed employee and customer information had been stolen.
